Ben Burkett was raised in Toledo, Ohio and played football for St. John’s Jesuit High School. Ben Burkett helped St. John’s Jesuit to the Ohio State playoffs. Ben Burkett received many honors including PrepStar All-Region offensive lineman, ranked 166th-best offensive tackle nationally by ESPN, two-time all-state, three-time all-district, three-time all-city honoree and was selected to play in Ohio’s North-South All-Star game.

In 2007, Ben Burkett joined the Northwestern Wildcats football team. The 6’4” 285 lbs offensive lineman did not play in any Northwestern Wildcats football games during his first season. In 2008, Ben Burkett started in all 13 Northwestern Wildcats football games as a center. Ben Burkett was named Phil Steele’s third-team All-Freshman selection, first-team All-Big Ten Freshman team honoree and was Northwestern Wildcats NGN Offensive Newcomer of the Year Award. Ben Burkett was also named Northwestern Wildcats offensive player of the week at Indiana and Northwestern Wildcats offensive player of the game against Syracuse. Ben Burkett was named to the 2009 Rimington Trophy watch list before the beginning of the Northwestern Wildcats 2009 football season.
