Ben Johnson was raised in Trevor, Wisconsin and played football for Shoreland Lutheran High School. While playing for Shoreland Ben Johnson had 195 solo tackles, 44 assisted tackles, 10 interceptions and 26 tackles for loss. Ben Johnson also made 53 receptions for 1,098 yards and 14 touchdowns as a receiver. Ben Johnson received many honors including being ranked 10th among all players in Wisconsin by, first-team all-state selection, two-time Kenosha News All-County and Midwest Classic All-Conference first-team selection, Midwest Classic Defensive Player of the Year, U.S. All-American Bowl nominee, U.S. Army National Scholar-Athlete Award, Defensive Player of the Year and was selected to play in Wisconsin’s North-South All-Star game.

In 2007, Ben Johnson joined the Northwestern Wildcats football team. Ben Johnson was named Northwestern Wildcats special teams practice player of the week against Iowa. In 2008, Ben Johnson made his first Northwestern Wildcats blocked punt against Michigan. Ben Johnson also had a career high three tackles when Northwestern Wildcats played Purdue. Ben Johnson will be the starting outside linebacker for the Northwestern Wildcats 2009 football season.
