Brendan Smith was raised in Andover, Massachusetts and played football for New Hampton Prep. During his career at New Hampton Prep Brendan Smith had 4,073 passing yards, 10 interceptions, rushed for 3,013 yards and had 74 touchdowns. Brendan Smith also had 113 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, 6 interceptions and 5 fumble recoveries. Brendan Smith received many honors including New England Prep School Player of the Year, Gatorade New Hampshire Player of the Year, three-time All-New England Prep School football team, Boston Globe Prep School Class A Most Valuable Player and was team MVP.

In 2005, Brendan Smith joined the Northwestern Wildcats football team. Brendan Smith was named Sporting News honorable mention Freshman All-American during his first Northwestern Wildcats football season. Brendan Smith was named Northwestern Wildcats special teams player of the game against Illinois. Brendan Smith will be starting free safety for the Northwestern Wildcats 2009 football season. Brendan Smith was named Phil Steele’s first-team preseason All-Big Ten safety.
