Hunter Bates was raised in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and played football for Nease High School. As a four year starter for Nease, Hunter Bates had a total of 135 tackles, four interceptions and four punt returns for touchdowns. Hunter Bates received many honors including PrepStar All-Southeast Region defensive back, ranked 75th-best safety nationally by ESPN, First-team all-state Class 4A selection, First-team All-St. Johns River Conference, first-team All-First Coast honoree and was team captain.

In 2008, Hunter Bates joined the Northwestern Wildcats football team. Hunter Bates did not play in any games during his first Northwestern Wildcats football season. Hunter Bates was named Northwestern Wildcats defensive practice player of the week against Michigan State and Northwestern Wildcats special teams practice player of the week against Syracuse. The 5’10” 175 lbs safety will be competing for the Northwestern Wildcats backup safety position for the Northwestern Wildcats 2009 football season.
