Stephen Simmons was raised in St. Louis, Missouri and played football for St. Louis University High. During his senior year at SLUH Stephen Simmons rushed for 1,583 yards, had 41 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. Stephen Simmons had a SLUH career high with 4,007 rushing yards. Stephen Simmons received many honors including SuperPrep All-Midlands Region running backed, ranked 24th best player in the Midlands Region, Two-time all-state selection, three-time St. Louis Post-Dispatch All-Metro, 2004 MCC Player of the Year and was a U.S. Army All-American Combine participant.

In 2006, Stephen Simmons joined the Northwestern Wildcats football team. The 5’8” 185 lbs running back was named Northwestern Wildcats offensive practice player of the week against Iowa. In 2007, Stephen Simmons played in nine Northwestern Wildcats football games. When the Northwestern Wildcats played Ohio State Stephen Simmons returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown which was the second-longest return in Northwestern Wildcats football history. Stephen Simmons received Northwestern Wildcats NGN Newcomer of the Year Award. In 2008, Stephen Simmons played in 10 games for the Northwestern Wildcats football team. In his third career start for the Northwestern Wildcats, Stephen Simmons had career high 22 caries and 69 rushing yards. Stephen Simmons was named Northwestern Wildcats special teams player of the game against Syracuse. Stephen Simmons will start the Northwestern Wildcats 2009 football season as a tailback.
